<image:caption>"Shit!" Farah gasped as one of her boots lost purchase and she rolled her ankle painfully. She hopped a couple times then gritted her teeth and ran on. "Son of a kobold," she swore against the waves of pain shooting through her foot. Minor as it was, this injury had the potential to cost her dearly. Not for the first time, Farah silenced the annoying voice in her head reminding her that she should have pulled in a couple other rangers for this job. The posting was meant for a team of at least three so Farah had needed to forge a couple other signatures to claim it. She'd get an earful from the hallkeeper in Brengar when she reported back for the bounty. If she reported back. Farah quickly struck that thought from her mind - she’d been doing this a long time, and had taken on many, much more difficult missions. She didn’t need a team of replacements, she could handle this alone.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Rift Collection - A Lifetime - “Ninety-seven!”</image:title>
<image:caption>Adison reeled back from the counter, her jaw dropping and her eyes going wide. Cinder threw her arms up and nearly jumped off the stool, but caught herself before she took her celebration too far. Adison’s smug grin returned in a flash. “Nope!” “Ugh!” Cinder slapped her palms down on the counter, her chin dropping down to her chest. “So close,” Adison crowed, taking a sip of brandy from a crystal tumbler. Cinder raised her head slowly to glare at her friend. “You said the same thing when I guessed one hundred and twenty! And again at one hundred and six! What do you consider close?” “You’re certainly less than one hundred off.”</image:caption>

<image:title>The Rift Collection - A Lifetime - Cinder clicked her tongue – she’d have won the game by now if Adison was human. Her vigor and beauty would have made pinpointing her age simple. But elfkin aged very differently from humans, eyra, and even siska. Cinder was fourteen, which made her a young adult in eyra reckoning. Her exotic, red-tinged fur would retain its youthful lustre for perhaps another fifteen years before dulling. Her teeth and tail would probably show her advancing age even before that. Elfkin didn’t have to suffer such decay. Once they hit their late twenties, they’d look more or less the same for the next century and a half. Cinder sighed and planted an elbow on the counter, laying her chin in her palm.</image:title>
<image:caption>“You could at least tell me if I’m high or low.” “Hmm, nope,” said Adison, turning back to her with a tall, skinny bottle in hand. She poured herself another glass. “I could tell you a story to help you guess though. But first.” She reached below the counter and lifted out a small basket filled with dried and salted locusts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Only it wasn’t water in the bowls. Damon’s right hand unclenched, his fingers twitching, and he raised his arm ever so slightly. Slowly, deliberately. The one in the middle, he thought. Maybe. No. His heart began to pound in his ears and he lowered his arm back to his lap. Not yet. He wasn’t quite ready. But soon. He let out the long-held breath slowly, allowing his eyes to drift from the table – letting them wander about the proudly decorated cabin. He looked to the back wall first, as he always did. There, a round slice from the trunk of a young redwood tree was fastened to the wall, its bottom edge resting on the polished wooden floor, its upper edge nearly lost in the darkness of the rafters. Sunken into its rich sienna timber were small black-iron disks, some smaller than a fingernail, others the size of an apple. Damon’s chest swelled with pride.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Rift Collection - My Name</image:title>
<image:caption>The image of a desert road lingered longer than the rest. This memory was a vivid one. Recent. Armed and armored kobolds with long spears bristled around him. He could smell his own blood. He could hear the commotion in the human village behind him. Scales cracked and spears snapped as he fought once again. The kobolds were strong. Determined. But small. They didn’t stand a chance. A bloody battlefield. A long recovery. A few warm hands. Many words - kind ones, perhaps. Kysis wondered what it amounted to. But that thought too was torn from him, turned about, and scrutinized. More memories flashed – some of battle, others of peace. Then came the faces, some blurred, some half-remembered, none that lingered. Simple travellers along his life’s road – or so the scale-less would say.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Rift Collection - The Lesser Prodigy</image:title>
<image:caption>Damon unconsciously bit his lip in apprehension. Violet, the older girl, was one of his top students. She was intelligent, beautiful, powerful, and the granddaughter and heir apparent to the famous Count Alden Everstream, Lord of Seraph’s Vale. Her arcane proficiencies were near perfect for magical combat and her combined test scores had, for a time, been the highest of any young mage at the Daemedran Academy. There were few students in the entire breadth of the institution who were as impressive as her. “Don’t worry Vetra,” Violet said loudly, her hands on her hips as she looked down at the younger girl. “I’ll make this quick.” The other students whooped and whistled. Danson snorted. For an elfkin, the girl was surprisingly brash and arrogant. Not that she didn’t have reason to be - Danson allowed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Rift Collection - The Lesser Prodigy</image:title>
<image:caption>An especially loud crack split the air and one of the boys gasped loudly as he was flung to the ground, his energy shield sparking and fading away. Damon clapped politely, though the modest applause was drowned out by his cheering students. He sighed again. “Everyone wants to be a battlemage these days,” he lamented quietly, turning back to his book as his assistants took the stage to break down the match and offer their advice on what each of the aspiring mages could have done better. Danson tuned them out, intending to devour a paragraph or two before the next match started. His own interests lay more towards theoretical works and spellcrafting, the very topics the papers contained in this book discussed. Not that he wasn’t familiar with combat spells and their application, but the idea of using his skill in the arcane for fighting bored him. Especially when there were so many other, more fascinating applications.</image:caption>

<image:title>One in Three - Damon Lyn sat alone at the small wooden table.</image:title>
<image:caption>His lightly-clenched fists rested on his muscled thighs and his solemn brown eyes were fixed on the three ornate drinking bowls placed before him. His father was waiting outside. For the hundredth time that day, Damon took a deep breath and let his gaze sweep between the three carved bowls. A clear and still liquid rested just below the rim of each, its glassy surface reflecting the dim candlelight like the placid waters of a forest pool at sunset. Only it wasn’t water in the bowls. But soon.</image:caption>

<image:title>Alone - Farah Greenbow hurdled a fallen oak then dropped down to her knees and allowed her momentum to carry her under a low hanging branch laden with drooping, rain-slick leaves. Springing back to her feet and adjusting the bow slung across her body, she continued her sprint through the thick and thoroughly drenched forest. She was headed downhill, towards the swollen stream at the bottom of the ravine and the place she had prepared during last night’s storm. Behind her, several angry voices called out. They were fanning out to try and close her in, and to their credit they were actually managing to keep up with the seasoned ranger. Farah could tell from the noise that all six of the remaining bandits were in pursuit. That was no surprise, she’d been harrying the outlaw clan for the last three days and had already felled eight of them with well-placed arrows. Farah was a little surprised they hadn’t scattered, or at least tried to set out with a handful of their ill-gotten gains, but she supposed greed could be a powerful motivator.</image:title>

<image:title>A Lifetime - Adison waited patiently at the top of the cellar stairs, listening to the conclusion of their heated exchange, a ring on her right hand glowing faintly. She held Cinder’s re-filled mug close to her chest. The elfkin woman trusted Cinder to send the young man and his tiresome advances running, but still couldn’t help but worry. He was more than twice her size after all. If it came to blows…</image:title>
<image:caption>Just then a commotion broke out and a loud bang had Adison springing forward, darting through the back room and through the door that led out behind the bar. She froze in the doorway, still holding the mug – from which she hadn’t spilled a drop of beer – and stared in surprise at the scene before her. Cinder was standing upon her stool, one hand grasping the young noble by his hair, the other holding the tip of a small dagger just below his eye. Blood was streaming from the man’s nose and right hand, which he was gripping tightly with the other. Adison took a breath. “Enough Cinder,” she said, taking care to sound stern, but not too stern.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Lifetime</image:title>
<image:caption>The eyra jill leaned forward in her stool, her silky-furred elbows pressing down on the edge of the bar. The tiny claw on one diminutive finger tapped her chin as her eyes narrowed, staring across the polished oaken service counter into the smug expression of the blue-haired elfkin woman. Cinder ran her tongue over the pointed canines behind her tightly pursed lips. Adison’s crystalline eyes, the same cerulean shade as her hair, sparkled as her confident grin widened. The fire blazing in the hearth on the other side of the empty dining room crackled, sending an ember tumbling down to the expensive redwood floor. Cinder’s hand shot down from her chin and slapped the counter. “Ninety-seven!” Adison reeled back from the counter, her jaw dropping and her eyes going wide. Cinder threw her arms up and nearly jumped off the stool, but caught herself before she took her celebration too far.</image:caption>
